WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Four Designers create a design around the Maynard Side Table [gold leaf] by Worlds Away at Clayton Home

Cristin of Simplified Bee invited me and three other designers to take part in her Design Blogger Series: What Would You Do? We were instructed to select 4 to 5 additional items to pull together a look using the stunning gold leaf side table. Here was my interpretation and explanation of the design:

"2011 is all about a little spontaneity. This look is inspired by Jessica Snow’s artwork, Louis the Third, which features overlapping lines in energetic hues. Affordably priced at $200 for a 17”x 22’ print, there’s still enough money in the budget to have it framed. The Brownie sofa [with its nailhead trim] grounds the space while adding a touch of glamour. Pulling colors from the artwork, I chose a versatile peacock blue chair and a gold Greek key rug to further the modern, funky vibe. Thom Filicia’s Citysquare fabric carries the Greek motif to the windows as drapery panels and to the sofa as accent pillows. Toss a couple of solid canary yellow pillows onto the sofa to complete the look. Hovering over the room is the most gorgeous pendant light which borrows metallic cues from the side table and its shape from the artwork. I would never have a sad day in this room." - Erika Ward

Be sure to stop over at Cristin's to see the other design boards. It's funny how each person's design gives you clues to their personality.

Based on my design, how would you describe my personality? I'll let you know if you are right.

As always, thanks for reading!

INTERIOR DESIGN FOR COUPLES

How Erika Ward Interiors helped newlyweds find common ground in designing their space while maintaining "shalom in the home."

"Interior Design for Couples" should be a chapter in the PreMarital Counseling Handbook. Gone are the days when husbands took a hands off approach in regards to their home's decor. In my previous post entitled, "Designing for the Sexes," I asked readers about their mate's involvement in making decisions on decorating, etc. Here's what Tammy had to say:

I see more and more men speaking up about their design preferences and I love it. Unlike Tammy, most wives don't know how to handle their husband's opinions about design. As a Design Consultant, I also act as an interpreter by translating his-speak and her-speak into a love language they both understand.

Couples therapy
I received an email from newlyweds (the husband!) asking for assistance in decorating their Master Suite. They were moving into a new development in Buckhead where they would reside for one year, then purchase a single family home when they found the right property.

They agreed to start with a clean slate in the bedroom. He requested the design be clean, brown, and void of flowers and frill...frill meaning drapery. She requested a bedroom retreat with lots of color and silk drapery panels. They did find common ground in a color palette consisting of teal, goldenrod, and chocolate.

Based on their design preferences here is the concept board for their Master Bedroom...

...and for the Master Bath...

The process
Via email, the couple received the above design along with a resource guide that provided them with the cost and where to buy information. What's great about these concept boards is that they allow the homeowners to buy items at their own pace.

After the purchases were made, I visited their home to place items as well as consult on the rest of the apartment! Tomorrow, I will not only reveal photos of the master bedroom, but also the kitchen, dining, living room, and guest bedroom!

READER POLL: Are concept boards / moodboards effective in helping you visualize a space? If you answered no, then what method do you prefer?

FASHION FRIDAY: BECKHAM INSPIRED LIVING ROOM

Fashion Friday brings a little eye candy for the ladies and more design inspiration for the fellas. David Beckham has certainly made a name for himself as a fearless fashion influence both here in the States as well as Europe. As seen below, he has flawlessly pulled off the juxtaposition of a tailored yet relaxed look.

His shirt, tie, and cardigan paired with rugged, faded jeans inspired the perfect mood board for a bachelor's living room. Feast your eyes on this!

And there you have it...A room that is as sophisticated, sexy, and awaiting cuddle time with your lady or a game night with the guys. Men (and ladies), I would love your feedback...Don't be shy.
Until next time...take good care.

Fashion Friday: Jason Wu Inspired Home Office

Jason Wu, a former Narciso Rodriguez intern now one of the most talked about young talent, became known to the general public when his dress was worn by First Lady Michelle Obama at her inaugural ball. His designs have an unpretentious elegance and mostly consists of clean, classic lines.

His modest, one-bedroom midtown apartment was featured in New York Magazine (shown below) has a monochromatic gray color palette. Stark and very simply decorated, he adds spots of color as shown in the artwork hung above his living room sofa.

Though his home office was not featured in this article, if I had to guess what it would look like based on the minimalist design of the other rooms then it would look something like this:

Wu, a self-professed perfectionist, forgoes an apartment of grandeur and thinks of his home as a calming little universe where he can savor what's happening now and relax with cooking.

GQ Inspired Dining Room

I've whipped up a little something for the fellas today...please know that I have not forgotten you. So I hear you're looking to trade your old college dorm furniture for something more polished and sophisticated. A room that signifies the smooth, debonair individual you are today? Look no further than today's mood board inspired by menswear, of course. This Bachelor's Dining Room offers clean lines, neutral tones, and lots of texture. Furnishings I've chosen for this room fit your lifestyle, such as the faux croc bar trays and the puzzle bookcase has been repurposed to serve as an informal china cabinet. Display what you like as long as it exudes the same classic qualities as your larger furniture pieces.

You Sir, have officially been upgraded!

Perhaps you do still live in the dorm, that's no excuse for being lackluster in the style department. Check out these images from the New York Magazine which spotlighted 21-year-old Maximilian Sinsteden’s dorm room. It has been dubbed by the NYM as a space fit for Thurston Howell III (the millionaire from Gilligan's Island in case you've forgotten). I concur!

King of Pop Inspired Dressing Room

I'm still unable to digest the passing of Michael Jackson and cannot seem to pull away from news coverage, music videos, or reading about his life on the internet. There are so many rumors swirling everywhere and it's hard to distiguish what is fact and what is fiction. If you know me, you are aware that I am always seeking truth and consistency...Aside from MJ's obvious music talent, he's been consistently known for his style and is a pop culture fashion icon.
You do see where I am going with this right? You've guessed it, a MJ inspired mood board...and what better room to *spotlight* than a dressing room? Here goes,
Do you love it?! And look, there's more!

Mariah Carey's Closet

Kimora Lee Simmons surrounded in her world of Fabulosity

Sorry, I digress..this post is a homage to Michael Jackson, but I just couldn't resist throwing in a few extras for you. MJ will be sorely missed, but his legacy of talent AND style live on forever! Until next time!

Urban Hangout Suite

Do you think of your outdoor space as a bonus room? Sure your patio is just a concrete slab, but there is much more potential there than you could ever imagine. Just for a moment think about your favorite restaurant, lounge, or hang out spot that offers patio seating. What makes it an attractive spot? Atmosphere. Food. People, right? Well today, I'm here to save the day regarding atmosphere, but the food and folks are up to you.
Take a look at Nikki B. below...she fierce and without a doubt fashionable and is the inspiration for today's mood board.

It doesn't take much to achieve this transformation. Just a few accessories can turn your nondescript patio into an urban hangout suite.

New Room for Mommy's Big Girl

Ava Grace is now 2 years old and has outgrown her little crib...yet, another reason to redecorate! Here's the adorable inspiration outfit (from Gymboree) chosen for this design...

Ava has a twin brother, Stay tuned for his room makeover!
