FASHION FRIDAY: FALL 2010 - AN AFFAIR WITH COLOR

Pardon me if today's Fashion Friday feature sounds more like a book of love letters. I have a weakness for Autumn, no other season is better. The turning of autumn leaves gives me comfort and reaffirms that change is good. The crisp Fall breeze is a relief from sweltering Summer and offers the best clothing no other season could. In your wardrobe and in your home these color combos are a guaranteed bet, the effect they have on you will be one you will never forget...

Orange spice and graphite, it's been a year since we've last connected. In Fall you are still first on my mind, the others are rejected.  Orange spice, your warm hue invigorates me and Graphite, you add instant sophistication when you appear. Chic, timeless, and dependable your style is so clear. Welcome back, I've missed you my dear.

...with a side of dijon is what I said to the server, but it doesn't mean you play second fiddle. It's just that you bring such strength that I can only handle a little. Your potent hue gets me notices when I walk into the room.  The men all pause and the ladies do, too! At home you signify style even if I have none. You're so confident, when along side other colors, that you are an accent to every one. Oh, how I love a secure hue. Welcome back friend, I sure missed you.

Cranberry and Caviar what can I say. You make him fall to his knees with your seductive sway. The passion you display is only for mature eyes to see, your deep reddish hue even makes me a little flirty. How dare you look so sexy especially on a high gloss wall? You give me a license to thrill when we are together each fall.

I hope these love letters didn't leave a rosy tint on your face. Knowing you would read them, I left it in good taste. Which colors do you love in the Fall? You can have many lovers without feeling guilty at all. You're in good company so go ahead share with us. I promise we won't judge you on your color lusts...

One way to have fun this fall is to indulge in feathers. You will find soft, wispy ostrich feathers on everything from headboards, skirts, shoes, and even lingerie. Accessorize your home with feathers by adding accent pillows dyed in scrumptious colors of chartreuse and fuchsia. Find these and more at Horchow.com or Calypso St. Barth.

Black and gold is a classic color combination that signifies tremendous wealth and opulence. Making brazen appearances on the runway and in our rooms, get a wild hair and try a golden fixture or a molten 24K dress.

According to a recent Pantone report, some of the hottest colors for Fall 2010 will be "Lipstick Red" and "Orchid Purple." Both colors were dominate on the runway of designer Carlos Miele Fall 2010 RTW Collection. Reds and purples signify deep passion. Not just relegated to clothing, be daring enough to try these emotionally charged colors in your home decor as accents in a neutral room.

Recording artist, Prince, was the inspiration for Balmain's Fall 2010 RTW Collection. A regal color, purple and its various hues, look fantastic on just about any complexion and shockingly beautiful in your home.  Add a spark of purple, ultraviolet, aubergine, or eggplant to your home as seen in this festive table setting.

How will you incorporate these hot Fall colors in your home and/or wardrobe?

3 TRICKS TO STYLING YOUR WARDROBE AND HOME

Fashion stylists have mastered the use of color to accentuate the positives and disguise the negatives when helping women put their best foot forward.  You can also use these tricks when dressing your home.  Here are three fashion tips that have be translated into purposeful uses for your home.

1.) Use Monochromatic Color
You've heard when dressing in darker colors, say black, navy, or brown, you create a longer, leaner silhouette.  Well, when painting adjoining rooms in your home using monochromatic colors (colors derived from a single base hue) you create the appearance of more square footage and visual flow between rooms.

Lighter colors tend to make walls recede and creates an open and airy atmosphere, while warmer, darker colors tend to draw the eye forward making the room appear more cozy and intimate.
2.) Use Bright Colors as AccentsSure you love neon pink or highlighter yellow, but you would not dress head to toe in such a bright color...everything in moderation.  Instead, wearing a colorful top would draw attention to your beautiful eyes, while distracting from the lower half if problem areas exist. Use this technique in your home to draw attention to specific parts of a room (create a focal point) and away from less desirable areas.
3.) Use Stripes to Create Balance and Proportion
When using stripes in fashion and in dressing your home, the same concept applies.  Horizontal stripes make narrow object appear wider, while vertical stripes make short objects appear taller. In dressing, horizontal stripes are known to make small bosoms appear more ample.  In the image below, the stripes create the optical illusion of  a wide open space and adds graphic interest to the walls. If the stripes were vertical the room would appear taller.  Not fond of stripes? Hang your curtain rods close to the ceiling.  The length of floor to ceiling curtains achieve this same illusion.

Consider using one of these concepts when accentuating your home's best assets.  Can you think of other fashion tips that could be used in your home?

FASHION FRIDAY: CHAMPAGNE ON THE BEACH

Last night my husband and I shared our daydream of a vacation without the children. His dream took us to the French Riviera, my daydream didn't require much other than champagne and a beach. Once his daydream turned into a real slumber, my mind drifted to South Beach's most luxurious hotel, The Tides. Designed by present-day legend, Kelly Wearstler, the decor has a monochromatic palette of neutral hues and muted metallics much like pieces in Tory Burch's Summer/PreFall 2010 Collection.
[1.] Yarn Ziron Dress/Tory Burch  [2.] Percy 2 Sequin High Wedge/Tory Burch  [3.]Keswick Caning Wide Bangle/Kate Spade  [4.] Tides Suite/The Tides South Beach

Wanting to "explore the mix of embellishment and texture, of unexpected pairings like sequins with chunky knits or light tweeds" Tory's inspiration behind her line sounds like a description of The Tides' interior. Just add the words relaxation and elegance, sand and surf...there is no better combination.

The bangle (#3) from Kate Spade has an intricate golden weave pattern inspired by french bistro chairs. Reminds you of the same pattern seen in the (#4) vintage dining set...experiencing a little déjà vu?

There are two more combinations I think you will enjoy...

[1.] Ensemble from Tory Burch Spring 2010 Collection [2.] Ballet Flat/Tory Burch [3.] Link Bracelet/Tory Burch  [4.] Premier Oceanfront Suite/The Tides South Beach

[1.] Linen bustier dress/J.Crew [2.] Graphic cut-work sandal/Karen Millen [3.] Mixed pavé cable link bracelet/J.Crew  [4.] Coral Suite/The Tides South Beach

Is anyone else as smitten as I am with champagne hues and luxurious beach interiors? Have you ever vistied The Tides?

FASHION FRIDAY: ZAC POSEN EXPLORES CONDO DESIGN

This week fashion designer, Zac Posen, revealed his "staged" duplex model unit at 16 West 21st Street in New York's Ladies' Mile historic district of Manhattan.  This collaboration between a fashion designer and an architect is the first since the real estate slump (previous collabos include PeterSom at 485 Fifth Avenue at Armani/Casa at 20 Pine).

Warning: This is not your typical staging assignment...

The developer, F and T Group, is hoping to attract the "creative class" of high-end buyers that Posen epitomizes.

Posen designed this kitchen (above) as he would his own. Boasting a porcelain sink and free standing island, this space would be considered his "dream kitchen."

The bedrooms are dark and moody...two words you would not generally use to describe model home decor.

all photos by Will Femia

You can see the complete slideshow of this condo on NY Curbed real estate blog. I love Zac Posen's runway style, but his taste in decor is a bit too goth for my liking. What I am loving is the marriage of fashion, interior design, architecture, and real estate! It's going to be interesting to see how the market responds to this venture.

Which fashion designer would you love to see try their hand at interior design? My pick...Tory Burch. As a bonus, here's a video of Tory discussing the the marvelous connection between fashion and interior design (watch it, it's only 2mins)...

WEDDING DECOR INSPIRED BY FASHION AND INTERIOR DESIGN

Last Sunday at The Wedding Experience, Michelle Gainey, owner of Lemiga Events presented three inspiration boards she compiled to create the three table designs you see below. During Michelle's presentation, I began developing the personalities of these brides from the clues I gained from the inspiration boards.

I imagine this table entitled Classic Romance to belong to a bride with very refined taste. She loves billowy ball gowns, fine china, pretty shiny things, and above all the color pink.

Take a look at this romantic table setting. So feminine, so lovely, the table linens have dressmaker details that are sweet, but not immature. The china's intricate details are reminiscent of stitching on a gown and are accented by a fresh flower corsage.

Antiqued silver, mercury, and glass illuminate the table with help from candlelight. Flowers are displayed across the length of the table presenting each guest with their own personal arrangement. The wedding cake takes my breath away. The lattice design from the table linens is carried forth in the cake design as well as the ruffled skirt and exquisite heirloom brooch.

The next bride is a modern bride who is quite the socialite. Not only is she fashionable, but she has a great interior design aesthetic.  She loves anything tufted, the color turquoise, and most recently purchased the coveted ghost chair and think everyone else should own one, too!

The table seating combines a tufted banquette with individual ghost chairs giving this decor a social, lounge-like feeling.  This socialite loves being seen at the latest hot spots and wants her wedding for feel like one as well.

The glass plates allow the turquoise, gold bordered table linens to take center stage...and check out that table runner! I can totally "see" our socialite bride with such details on the back of her favorite "party girl" dress. In lieu of the traditional wedding cake she has chosen a non-traditional mousse cake and handcrafted pastries back lit by clubby blue lights! This bride has style and attitude to boot!

This last bride is a bride after my own heart! The Couture Glam loves a little edge, but knows when to pull back. Her desire is to have a wedding decor that perfectly balances tradition and modernity.

The focal point of this table has to be the daring combination of blooms, succulents, and branches. What a captivating landscape! I could easily envision an outdoor wedding in a greehouse or directly under the moonlight! Table linens have a hint of glitz while the placesettings are simple, yet still very beautiful.

I wouldn't be surprise if the Couture Glam bride requested that her wedding cake mimic her gown. Custom fitted, cascading rosettes and of course something blue...her cake and gown exemplify perfection!

I've had a wonderful time discussing weddings this week and love to shake things up a bit.

If you are planning a sit down dinner this Mother's Day, I challenge you to incorporate one of the above elements into your own table design. If so, which element would you choose?

FASHION FRIDAY: RETAIL THERAPY & A CATWALK

So everyone in Atlanta is talking about Swank, the newest "impeccably stylish boutique" located in the Shops Around Lenox (across the street from Neiman Marcus).

The owner, Emily Dees Boulden is definitely on the cutting edge of fashion and has the the ability to stiff out lesser known talent in order to bring her clientele latest and greatest.

But what impresses me the most is her drive and speedy rise to the top of the high fashion retail food chain.  In 2004 she earned a degree in fashion merchandising from Ole Miss and four days later joined Saks Incorporated as an assistant buyer.  Two years later, in 2006 she bowed out of Saks to open Swank in Birmingham, Alabama.  After creating a cult-like following in Birmingham, she ventured to Atlanta to open the newest store in February of this year. She's kickin' retail a$$ first, and takin' names later!

And when you leave Swank dressed so fierce that you're burning to hit someone's runway...well you can. Head across the street to Lenox Mall where Simon is holding its Model for a Day contest.

If you want to strut your stuff, get there by 2:00pm to register. Only the first 100 eligible entrants will be considered. There's an impressive list of prizes including a professional photo shoot with celeb photographer Derek Blanks. You remember him as the photog who shot the alter ego photos for The Real Housewives of Atlanta last season.

This photo was my favorite...Sheree nailed both characters, didn't she?

If you are looking to stretch your fashion buck, you should check out A Clothes Encounter Luxury Consignment Event also on this Saturday at Flirt and Flutter Lash Loft (cute name) from 4pm-8pm.  Actress and fellow UGA alum Kaira Akita is the event's founder.

A Clothes Encounter collects gently-loved designer, name brand, and vintage women’s clothing and sells them for 30% - 80% off retail at seasonal luxury consignment events in support of local charities.

Great clothes for a great cause, sounds like a win-win to me!

Where will I be this Saturday...celebrating my twins' 3rd birthday! We're hosting 25 babes, tots, and preschoolers along with their parents for an afternoon of inflatables and fun. On Sunday you can find me at the Decorator's Show House and Gardens trying to refrain myself from taking a dip in the backyard pool and of course showing you around if you happen to come by. If you miss it this weekend, don't fret. The tour will continue through May 9th.

Alright, that about wraps up the week here...I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend. See you back on Monday!

FASHION FRIDAY: ADULT SWIM

Have you seen Mara Hoffman's Resort Swim 2010 Collection? These suits are ruthless enough to give the strongest lifeguard a heart attack. Shoot, they even made me a little green with envy.

Ready to peel off the layers?  Me? Ummm...no, well not yet anyway...

Her original prints are infused with worldly influences, nature, and fantasy.

I wonder if these suits come with a personal trainer? Hey maybe I can pitch the idea to her...

Oh and don't forget the perfect pair of sandals. High heels make your legs look like they go on for miles.

WARNING: This suit is not to be worn alone or while accompanying small children without backup assistance. I would die if one of those strings snapped while chasing one of my kids.

Again, are you ready for this year's hottest swimwear collection? If not, there's still time. Start this weekend...hope I haven't ruined your Friday.

Fashion Friday: Emily Sistrunk

About two years ago, I reconnected with Emily Sistrunk at our neighborhood playground. I hadn't seen her since we graduated college and we quickly updated each other on the past and present. While in school, I remember her working at the local department store as a makeup artist. She sat me down in her chair and in no time had me "catwalk ready" when in actuality I was only headed to a Corporate Finance class. I remember commenting about it being a bit "over the top" for everyday wear. She simply replied, "Sure, for most people but not you Erika." I laugh at that to this very day!

Today, Emily is an Atlanta based stylist, specializing in fashion catalog and print advertising. Currently represented by CREWS, Inc., she boasts an impressive client portfolio which include Macy's, Mens Wearhouse, LOFT, Carters/ OshKosh, Jones New York, Adidas/ Taylormade, American Airlines, Coca Cola, Miller Lite, Island/ Def Jam Records, EMI Records, and Turner Broadcasting.

Ideal work environment...
A tropical location? Actually, one of the best things about my line of work is that everyday is different. Whether we are shooting on a beach or in a studio-every client is different,  every shot is unique, fashion is constantly changing and so my focus is constantly changing. So I guess my ideal work environment is one that is always evolving creatively, working with people who are equally passionate about what we are trying to create.

When not styling.....
I am usually spending time with Donovan and Paul, I am at home reading a book, or cooking and enjoying my down time. Styling is a pretty high stress job, so when I get the chance to relax, I really relish it. One thing I am NOT doing...shopping!
photography, Alberto Oviedo

Heroes...
As far as other stylists who have influenced me, I like Brana Wolf, Camilla Nickerson, and of course Grace Coddington is genius. I'm also constantly looking at photographers work, the color and composition...Tim Walker is a favorite of mine. Personally though, my parents are my heroes. They have been completely supportive of me, and never doubted that I was making the right decision for myself by going into this business.

photography, Alberto Oviedo

Highest Compliment...
Of course it is wonderful to have someone tell you that they like your work and think you are talented, but since I work in an artistic medium I am never truly satisfied with my work. So the highest compliment to me is when someone compliments my work ethic.  There is no real "how to" guide on becoming a stylist. It's taken a lot of hard work and dedication, so I am always happy when someone notices.

photography, Alberto Oviedo

Lucky Break...
Signing with my agency, CREWS, was a lucky break. They have really been instrumental in helping me build my client base, and take care of my day to day business needs.

Eureka Moment...

After a couple of years working in the music business after college, I just up and quit my job. I quit! (Not that I would necessarily recommend this) I had been styling for fun, working on my book for years and just decided I was going to try to do it full time. I knew that it was my passion, and figured that if I didn't follow my dreams I would always regret it. It was a bold move, and I am very lucky that it has worked out.

photography, Alberto Oviedo
I wish I had...
Quit my job earlier! No, I really try not to have regrets in life...every decision is the right one, because its the one I decided to make!

photography, Alberto Oviedo

Looking forward to...
Taking a vacation! I am currently working on a new website, so I am going to be so happy when that is done. I can't wait for spring to come, which means more shoots outdoors and spring fashion (sundresses and sandals, yes!).

photography, Alberto Oviedo

Best advice you've ever received...
My dad told me that I would never work as hard for anyone else as I do for myself. He was right! I love working for myself, and I love knowing that the effort that I put into each project is a direct reflection of myself.

I'm so unbelievably proud of Emily and all that she's accomplished. She's a great example of one who is driven, focused, and doesn't mind investing hardwork and sacrifice to be one of the best in her field.

I love the advice she received from her father regarding entrepreneurship. What is some the best advice you've ever received?
