ATLANTA IS TALKING ABOUT JANICE PALMER

Text and Photography by Erika Ward

May 8th concluded the Atlanta Symphony Associates' 41st Annual Decorators' Show House and Gardens. Each year, the creme de la creme of the Atlanta design community create gorgeous spaces to inspire visitors and to raise funds for the Education and Community Engagement Initiatives of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. This year was especially significant to me because it was the first time a Black interior designer was showcased as a lead designer. Before the final curtain call I was fortunate enough to interview the designer everyone was buzzing about, Janice Palmer of Y Design International.

Her assignment, The Young Lady's Room, was one of the most talked about spaces on this year's tour and for good reason. Palmer's design cleverly encompassed multicultural influences mixed with the love of travel, fashion, and music.

Every design element in this space exudes luxury even down to the sumptuous fabrics [from Designer's Guild and Osborne and Little] on the floor pillows.

"The inspiration behind this design is a a fictitious 20-year old renaissance woman named Malina. She is a music student at Juilliard," as Palmer tells the story. "....And her love for fashion is a close second to her passion for the cello. If she [Malina] could have a dual career it would be as a top notch cellist who designs one-of-a-kind clothing with the flair of Marc Jacobs and Rachel Roy combined."

Fashion-influences are distributed throughout the room both in subtle and more literal references. Such is evident in this signature piece--a mannequin draped in luxurious silk designed by Travis & Company.

As I toured the room, I noted the subtle Middle Eastern influence as seen in the shape of the custom headboard designed by Palmer's assistant, Manisha Kulkarni, as well as the room's color palette.

As opposed to referring to the rich shades as colors, Palmer thinks of them as spices. A warm blend of vibrant fabrics draw their hues from spices such as saffron, marigold, cinnamon, white pepper, lemon peel, lime peel, red wine and dark cacao. "I decided to build on a neutral foundation to allow the plush fabrics and spices to really pop," Palmer explains. "Simultaneously, the backdrop [Benjamin Moore's AF-155 Weimaraner] creates a soothing, airy atmosphere. Take a look around. In this room alone there are a total of 6 windows where we see the sky and treetops. It's like a bedroom in a treehouse."

Each pair of drapery panels boasts dressmaker details such as boxed pleats, crystal embellishments, and french [banding] fabric trim. Hardware with lucite finials complete this polished ensemble.

Murano glass fixtures, like this elegant waterfall
Sillicate Chandelier by Baker Furniture, were a common thread throughout the show house.

This wingchair upholstered in Casamance fine fabrics, headboard, pouf, and bench are all custom pieces available through Y Design International.

Here a half-moon shaped desk by Travis and Company and Organic Baroque Chair designed by Tony Duquette/Baker Furniture echo the soft feminine curves repeated throughout the bedroom.

The oversized octagonal mirror and handsome walnut Skate server by Baker Furniture balance out the femininity of the space and keeps it from feeling too girly.

My love affair with the Young Lady's Bedroom continued into the en suite bathroom.

A touch of hot pink lends a playful, flirty feel, yet the palette is still very soothing.

I was excited to see a second Juju hat [a celebratory Cameroonian headdress] in the space. I found it to be symbol of celebration for what Janice Palmer has accomplished in this bedroom and as interior designer, and secondly as the first Black lead designer appearing in this magnificent show house. Thank you Janice for allowing me to share your inspiration and work with the world. I pray that you continue to receive the exposure and recognition you so very well deserve!

SEMI-SUITE DREAMS: CRAVING CHOCOLATE-HUED BEDROOMS

Are you a self-professed chocoholic? I am and will be the first to admit it! What makes chocolate feel so sinful? I do not have the answer, but I do have another confession. Instead of indulging my sweet tooth publicly, I've opted to do so in the privacy of my bedroom—by finding design inspiration in a box of chocolates.

What color do you crave?

WHAT COLOR IS SENSUALITY?

In a recent interview, I was asked why I chose to pursue a career in interior design. Simply put, I gain joy from creating an atmosphere that supports way the client wants to feel.

Case in point, during a client consultation I asked a couple what kind of "mood" they wanted for their master bedroom. I threw out a few suggestions like restful, serene, relaxing just to encourage their thoughts. The husband's immediate response was "SEXUAL" (insert raised eyebrows here). The wife's answer made mention of a "love nest" or something. With all the eye exchange, I knew I needed to wrap things up before they tore into each other. But before I made my escape, I asked more specific questions about their color preferences. They both said they were open to any color just as long as it felt warm.

The psychology of interior design is intriguing because it engages all of our five senses and it has a way of affecting our moods without our awareness or permission.

But back to the client couple...In your opinion, what is a "sexual" paint color? What is sexy to me would probably be relaxing to someone else. What color is your bedroom?

SMITTEN BY: WARM GRAY + BRASS

This room continues to haunt me.

Every since that cold winter's day in Atlanta when I toured the AH&L Magazine's Christmas House this room designed by Amy D. Morris Interiors has haunted me. The gray walls, combined with warm woods, and brass accents had me wanting to slip under the covers and pull the curtains. I wanted so badly to paint my master bedroom this color, but my husband was turned off by the idea of painting our room any shade of gray. So I did the next best thing...I painted the guest room the exact same color (Sherwin Williams / Amazing Gray SW7044 ).  And of course he loves it.  Go figure.

Because I encourage my clients to take a closer look at what they have around the house before shopping for new items, I decided to practice what I preach. It surely worked for my sons' room as well as my daughter's room. I'm slowly pulling the room together with items I already own and can't wait to show you the final results!

Don't you just adore this space?

MASTER BEDROOM MAKEOVER

A Master Bedroom receives a extreme makeover courtesy of Erika Ward Interiors.

My client has lived in this house for 6 years and has a home full of beautiful, well-made furniture. She had made significant progress in decorating the main level of the home, but very little progress in her Master Bedroom. Her only purchase so far was an elegantly upholstered bed with nail head trim (as shown below) and she requested that it be included in her design plan.

I approached this project with the intention of creating a restful retreat my client could come home to after a demanding day on the job.

In the initial consultation, the client mentioned that she would be looking to move within the next year. With that in mind, I installed crown moulding in the bedroom (great for resale) and carefully chose accessories that would give the greatest impact.

THE FURNITURE
The initial plan was to have a mix of furnishings, but my client preferred to have furniture from the same collection. I presented the Metropolitan Collection/Brownstone Furniture sold through Erika Ward Interiors and she was smitten! Each piece is made from solid plantation grown mahogany, wears and espresso finish with antique gold crackled trim, and has solid brass hardware.

My client and I are very pleased with the outcome of this design and the improvements made for resale. What other improvements can you make to a bedroom that will attract future buyers?

Are you looking to greatly improve the look and feel of your home? Need quality home furnishings that outlast current trends? Contact me to schedule an online or in-home design consultation.

#NATEDAY

In case you haven't heard the ladies of the Moggit blog have rallied fellow design bloggers via twitter to declare today as Nate Berkus Day! In an effort to show The Nate Berkus Show producers how much we love "Nate the Great" (and why they should include an audience full of design bloggers) today we are posting on all things NATE!

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
When Nate released his book Home Rules: Transform the Place You Live Into a Place You'll Love in 2005, I purchased it the first day it hit the bookshelves.  I devoured each page of decorating advice complete with before and after photos of gorgeous room transformations.  The book included makeovers designed for celebrities such as Kirstie Allen, Jerry O'Connell, and Paige Davis, but it was love at first sight when I came across this bedroom design for celebrity hairstylist, Ellin Lavar.

THE INSPIRATION
Inspired by the dressing rooms of Paris couture houses, he transformed her nondescript bedroom into a European lap of luxury. The walls were given architectural interest through the use of crown and picture-frame moldings and boasted a smoky purple color palette.  His brilliant use of color and texture seduces all senses with plush, ivory carpeting, a headboard upholstered in lavender linen, silk drapes and toss pillows, and a gray/metallic wallpapered ceiling.  This dreamy bedroom truly defines the phrase "casual elegance."
Join in the #nateday fun, there's still time! Write a post to show Nate some love, tweet it, then add the #nateday hashtag behind your link to identify yourself as a Nate Berkus fan!

Do you plan to participate? If you did, please leave the link to your #nateday post in the comments sections for others to see!

STYLISH COUPLE FINDS DOMESTIC BLISS

"We want a design that reflects who we are as a couple." was the request I received when asked to decorate the home of a stylish, Atlanta couple. And though the couple moved into this Buckhead apartment only this past October, the space has been personalized to look like the single family home they will eventually purchase together. Before they moved in I toured the unit and was pleased to find a generous floorplan, high ceilings, and the contemporary finishes in the kitchen and bathrooms. But it wasn't until the clean-lined furniture, vibrant wall colors, and contemporary accents were added that the house became a home.

MASTER SUITE

Upholstered in rich Espresso Velvet, the bed's color and construction lends to the masculine side while the softness of the velvet appeals to feminine side.

It's natural that couples run into design challenges when combining households. Each person has their own design sensibility (or lack of) and need help in finding a decor style that suits them both. With the help of Erika Ward Interiors, this couple found domestic bliss and created a beautiful, welcoming place to call home and to host their guests.

INTERIOR DESIGN FOR COUPLES

How Erika Ward Interiors helped newlyweds find common ground in designing their space while maintaining "shalom in the home."

"Interior Design for Couples" should be a chapter in the PreMarital Counseling Handbook. Gone are the days when husbands took a hands off approach in regards to their home's decor. In my previous post entitled, "Designing for the Sexes," I asked readers about their mate's involvement in making decisions on decorating, etc. Here's what Tammy had to say:

I see more and more men speaking up about their design preferences and I love it. Unlike Tammy, most wives don't know how to handle their husband's opinions about design. As a Design Consultant, I also act as an interpreter by translating his-speak and her-speak into a love language they both understand.

Couples therapy
I received an email from newlyweds (the husband!) asking for assistance in decorating their Master Suite. They were moving into a new development in Buckhead where they would reside for one year, then purchase a single family home when they found the right property.

They agreed to start with a clean slate in the bedroom. He requested the design be clean, brown, and void of flowers and frill...frill meaning drapery. She requested a bedroom retreat with lots of color and silk drapery panels. They did find common ground in a color palette consisting of teal, goldenrod, and chocolate.

Based on their design preferences here is the concept board for their Master Bedroom...

...and for the Master Bath...

The process
Via email, the couple received the above design along with a resource guide that provided them with the cost and where to buy information. What's great about these concept boards is that they allow the homeowners to buy items at their own pace.

After the purchases were made, I visited their home to place items as well as consult on the rest of the apartment! Tomorrow, I will not only reveal photos of the master bedroom, but also the kitchen, dining, living room, and guest bedroom!

READER POLL: Are concept boards / moodboards effective in helping you visualize a space? If you answered no, then what method do you prefer?

Green + Gray for St. Patrick's Day...

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! Usually we associate a "fresher green" with all things Irish, but here's a fun little twist that spotlights green, but in a more subtle color palette.  ENTER GREEN AND GRAY...

These images are of my favorite rooms in the Coastal Living's 2009 Seawatch Idea House in Sunset Harbor, North Carolina.

Though these rooms may be a little too decorated for your taste, remember the purpose of these spaces are to assist you in generating ideas for your own home.  The introduction of pure white in this space makes the palette feel light, airy, and fresh. Adding white to the color scheme was one of the best ways for the designer to create the "coastal look" using green and gray.  I love this alternative color approach as opposed to the watery blues and tans traditionally used in coastal decor.

A elegant settee appears to be custom fitted for this little nook accented with pillows contain the same pattern as the drapery.  In this one photo, there are three different patterns yet they all flow seamlessly-the painted stripes on the wall, the leaf motif in the pillows and drapery, and the fabric covering the klismos chair.

The sparkle of the mosaic backsplash, the metallic hardware, and the mirrored cabinets add elements of modern luxury to this soothing color palette.

In love with this sophisticated take on green and gray? Consider making it yours by choosing any color from the palette below.
