BUDGET FRIENDLY TABLESETTINGS

"Never put off having a party because you can't do it in the same style as someone else. Do things in keeping with your own budget and surroundings-your entertaining will have a flavor all its own."
- Better Homes and Gardens, "Better Buffets" (1963)

For me the Fall/Winter holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year. For years I have been an attendee to holiday dinners, rarely the hostess. The last time I hosted Thanksgiving was back in 2004 when I packed tons of family and friends into a modest townhouse. We had an awesome time just as we did when we would all gather at my grandmother's house. I don't recall spending much time on table settings because there's always so many of us there. For those of you who have smaller families, below is an inspiration photograph (courtesy of Sarah Richardson Designs) that proves it doesn't take a lot of cash to spruce up your dinner table.

Fresh cut flowers in a simple glass vase is a floral arrangement that can make an amateur look like a pro. Be sure not to use flowers with a heavy fragrance, it may compete with the aromas from the food. No more hand washing china (assuming you own some). Melamine dishes offer a fashionable low cost alternative to china and can be loaded into the dishwasher for easy clean up. You can find them just about anywhere. Target and French Bull have tons of bold, affordable designs. Bed, Bath, and Beyond has a wide selection of entertaining goodies as well. When you use your American Express Prepaid Card, you receive FREE Shipping on select items! Woven place mats add warmth, texture, and dimension to your table setting. Depending on the flatware, woven place mats can be used in both formal and informal table settings. Lastly, acrylic flatware is used (in above photo) in lieu of traditional silverware. The clear, polished handles add a touch of sparkle and casual elegance. Another flatware option is the plastic flatware that looks just like silver! I love using them for informal parties and showers.
Try to implement one of these budget ideas into your holiday decor. So what if you're cutting corners a bit with snazzy melamine plates and utensils. If anyone has a problem with it their legs shouldn't be under your dinner table anyway. What's most important is the food, family, and friends.

How do you decorate for holiday gatherings?

MIDCENTURY MODERN MEETS GLOBAL BAZAAR

Finding your decor style takes a bit of investigative work. Unless you work in the design industry or consider yourself a design enthusiast, you probably have trouble describing what you like but you are able to recognize it when you see it.

During a recent telephone design consultation, my client shared with me her new found love for mid-century furniture. While shopping one afternoon she realized that each piece she was drawn to had mid-century design influences. This discovery increased her confidence in her decorating decisions and helped me to better assist her. As the conversation progressed, I recognized that while she likes the form and shape of midcentury furniture she also likes ethnic decor.

West Elm has an affordable selection of mid-century reproductions and global accessories that together make a home look effortlessly chic. Take a look at this design inspiration board I created using only products from West Elm!

When you shop West Elm online and use your America Express Prepaid Card you receive FREE SHIPPING on selected items. Take a look:

From the decorative woven bowl wall art to the carved wood coffee table and terracotta lamp guests would never know these items were purchased from a local retailer and not from a shop on the coast of Africa. Layer upon layer of color and texture makes this virtual living room both comfortable and approachable.

What has been your experience in mixing decor styles? How would you describe your style?

HEAVY METAL IN HOME DECOR

This article about heavy metal will not require you to listen to amplified guitar or wear a ripped tank top. It simply exposes the beauty of metal in interior design, outside of hardware and stainless steel appliances. I've encountered a number of really beautiful images of with innovative uses of corrugated metal and it reminded me of a previous article about achieving this look in your home.

This modern aesthetic may appear extreme to some but refreshing to others. Depending on the context, metal can make a space feel industrial, commercialized, cutting edge, or just simply add interest to a room. When paired with natural wood, metal takes on warmer qualities and becomes more livable. What's even more convincing is that using metal in your interior finishes can even prove to be a cost saver. I challenge you to uncover your inner rock star and take a look at how this raw material is changing the face of design.

Now more than ever it is important to manage your spending, especially in regard to your home decorating projects. Staying on budget can be tough when there are so many options in the marketplace.

I was recently offered a chance to experience the new American Express Prepaid Card and to learn about its many benefits. Currently, I'm in the process of decorating my master bedroom so the offer couldn't have been more timely. I'm always looking for easier ways to monitor and track my spending.

Photobucket

The American Express Prepaid Card allows you to establish a budget and stick to it. You can track your expenditures online and reload the card at anytime without a fee. The card works much like a credit card and can be used anywhere they accept American Express, even online at at ATMs. You also get many of the same benefits as a general American Express card holder such as:

-fraud protection
-purchase protection
-roadside assistance
-discounts and special offers
-world class 24-hour Customer Service and much more...

Getting started is easy and hassle-free. I ordered my reloadable prepaid card online and received it in the mail within a few days. Once I received the card, I activated it, connected the card to my bank account, then transferred the funds designated for my decorating project. Easy!

I've had much success in using the American Express Prepaid Card during my shopping adventures and can't wait to show you what I've done so far. The process worked so well that my husband asked to reload the card and use it to keep up with this gas expenditures. I'm all for keeping each other accountable for our spending, but he's going to have to order his own *wink*.

Would you consider trying the American Express Prepaid Card? I highly recommend it. Here's a link to order your own: www.americanexpress.com/prepaid

PROJECT ORGANIC GLAM

I'm so excited to get started on a new luxury condo project involving a few of my favorite fall colors--plum, mustard, green, brown, you get the idea. We're also combining a few rustic elements to pull together a look I call Organic Glam... Photobucket Weathered wood, mirrored accents, crushed velvet, and a fun feminine color palette is what I prescribed for this stylish female doc. I also pulled inspiration from this breakfast/sitting area designed by Christy Dillard for the 2011 ASO Showhouse. This was one of my favorite spaces in the home. I could've lingered here all afternoon.

The upholstered chairs below made me regret not adding teal to the design plan. Can't wait to see what I find once I start shopping.

PRESS: AJC INTERVIEWS ERIKA WARD ON DESIGNING ROOMS FOR CHILDREN

I'm sending a huge thank you to Atlanta Journal-Constitution for printing my work and interview in the AJC Homefinder cover story, "Rooms to Grow for Kids: Designing Bedrooms and Playrooms with Kids in Mind."

Ironically, this summer I've been doing a lot of designing and writing about children's spaces so this feature was very timely. If you are in the process of decorating a child's room, check out a few of my articles for inspiration and direction! And if you are in the Metro Atlanta Area, contact me for a consultation. I'm looking forward to working with you!

SMITTEN BY: STACKED FIREWOOD

Photobucket
I apologize in advance for ruining your last days of summer with a mention of stacked firewood, but I just can't help myself. At this very moment, the look on your face is probably the same look the Home Depot associate gave me when I asked for 12 bundles of firewood in the midst of 90 degree heat. Luckily they had a pallet stored in a shed and sold them to me for $1.00 per bundle! Nice!

I used the wood to fill my clients' unused fireplace as a part of an ongoing design project. Hopefully, I'll soon have more photos to share with you. Here's a progress shot below. She has two little ones that couldn't wait to cover themselves in the soot left by the previous homeowners [see inset] so I had to act fast. I absolutely love the results.

Photobucket

Unfortunately, I have a gas fireplace that doesn't require real wood so I won't be able to do something like this in my own home. The stacked wood has such a sculptural quality and the price can't be beat.

If you actually plan to use your fireplace for a purpose other than storing wood, the option below would be a better fit.

8 REASONS TO DECORATE WITH FAMILY PHOTOS

Photobucket
my grandfather

When I think of family treasure, I rarely think of items of monetary worth. Material things fluctuate in value, but nothing is more priceless than old family photos. I recently wrote an article for houzz on the 8 Therapeutic Benefits of a Family Photo Gallery.

living room eclectic living room

Here are 8 compelling reasons to decorate with family photos:

Family Photos
—
  1. Tell the story of a place and time
  2. Boost your antique collection
  3. Provide a source of inexpensive art
  4. Provide a sense of representation
  5. Comfort you
  6. Help your children remember their ancestors
  7. Make a statement about what's important to you
  8. Remind you of a proud heritage

It wasn't until my grandparents passed away that I inherited a few of these family jewels. A few months ago my uncle sent me these photos via email. I don't think he really knew how much these meant to me. To receive them was like Christmas in July.

Below is my maternal grandmother pictured with her in-laws, my great-grandparents. I don't remember my great-grandfather at all. He passed away when I was still a toddler but for years I enjoyed a rocking chair he made for me.

Photobucket

Here's my maternal grandfather, a handsome gentleman. If I had to guess, this photo is of his high school graduating class. I used Photoshop to create the corner photo inset to distinguish him from the rest of the group. In the actual photo, he's the man in the middle on the top row.

Photobucket

Again, you will see my grandfather in the inset. The only information missing from the photo below is the year it was taken. I posted this one on Facebook and another cousin noted that his father [my grandmother's brother] is in the photo, too.

Photobucket

I've yet to decide how I want to decorate using these photos. There are many more creative ways to display them outside of conventional framing.

For example, Brian Patrick Flynn made a larger-than-life statement using a family photo in his former loft.

In his current home, Brian continues the tradition of honoring his family with this vinyl photo backsplash.

DESIGN IDEAS FOR FOOTBALL WIVES

Tonight marks the first football game of the season for Georgia State University. My husband, the defensive line coach, guarantees a game opener of the season. I, of course, will be there to witness the gridiron action with the rest of the rowdy bunch.

Here's my winning coach with a winning smile at last season's opener. Isn't he handsome? I love my coach...

Photobucket
ok, back to design...
With a new season comes new sports paraphernalia. As a coach's wife, I'm convinced that I receive more than my fair share. From jerseys to trophies and plaques there is hardly any room to display it all without someone mistaking our home for a sports hall of fame.

Resisting the temptation to store everything in a cardboard box, I've had to find creative ways to show my support. I wrote an article for houzz featuring solutions to this decorating dilemma and provided some great ways to support the home team.

Here are a few examples:

Tiny tokens of appreciation are the easiest to blend into your decor. This silver helmet is a lovely accent among a pair of floating shelves. Need a change? Use this statuette as a paperweight or a bookend.

Signature Properties Model Home II traditional bedroom
No matter the sport, little helmets add big style. Integrate your child's sporting equipment into his room's decor and maybe less of it will end up on the floor. You know the saying, "If you can't beat them, join them."

HOW TO ADD CONTRAST TO A BUILT-IN BOOKCASE

"It looks great to me." was my husband's response when I told him I was headed back to my client's house to make a few more updates. I, on the other hand, was not convinced. Sure the transformation that took place in their family room was nothing short of amazing. We went from this:

Photobucket

to this...

Photobucket

But I couldn't resist adding a bit of texture to the back of the bookcases and I knew a little seagrass wallpaper would make all the difference. I purchased 1/8" hardboard from Lowes [had it cut to size at the store], adhered the wallpaper to the board with spray adhesive, then propped them up in the bookcase using the shelves to hold the boards in place.

Photobucket

Done!

We also installed a custom roman shade above the sink that coordinates perfectly with the drapery panels. I purchased the runner from World Market and love how it picks up the colors from the neighboring family room. See how the runner introduces a flirty fuchsia to soften up the other wise masculine look. The man of the house isn't too fond of it so I'll be shopping for other options! I had an opportunity to enjoyed it for about 20 minutes...
